Let’s face it, for hiking adventures to strolling around town nobody likes an overly puffy, sweaty-on-the-inside jacket. Luckily, Fjallraven has decided to release one of my all-time favorite men’s lightweight insulated winter jackets.
Meet the Skogso padded jacket from Fjallraven. With a Swedish styling, this jacket features a handsomely masculine look alongside a well-fitting appearance thanks to its body-hugging nature.
Surprisingly, there’s absolutely zero restriction on movement, making it a pleasure to hike with. I spent a full day hiking at 12,000 feet against the cold breeze and not once did I feel remotely uncomfortable.
For comparison I put another well-known brand’s lightweight insulated jacket I had on hand, and within a short period of time I was burning up. I felt sweaty, puffy and like I was walking around in a plastic shell. After throwing back on the Fjallraven Skogoso, I realized how much I appreciated the breathability, freedom of movement, and warm, but not sweaty hot, insulation qualities.
Speaking of breathability and insulation, you’ll find a G-1000 Original exterior construction. If you’ve ever owned any Fjallraven gear or clothing you’ll know that G-1000 is their go-to fabric for most things. It’s been around forever, yet this wonder material rivals a lot of modern fabrics out there. Personally, I love G-1000 and after owning a few pieces of clothing with it, it’s hard to go back!

Men’s Fjallraven Skogso Padded Jacket Review

What’s unique about G-1000 is that you can apply Greenland Wax to it in order to meet your specific weather and activity needs. The more wax you add the more water resistance and durability you get. Should you desire more breathability and a cooler feel, simply throw the garment in the washing machine at 104 degrees F.
Before I bought my first G-1000 piece of clothing from Fjallraven I thought the waxing process would be hard to learn, difficult, and so on. In reality, it’s the easiest thing ever! All you need is a block of Fjallraven Greenland Wax and a heat gun or hairdryer.
Simply rub on the wax and heat till it blends in with the fabric. That’s it! Of course, you can repeat the process and add more wax layers in special areas like the hood or knees for instance.

When it comes to insulation, the synthetic G-Loft supreme filling is a downright dream. It’s warm without ever getting sweaty-hot, and best of all, the interior lining that holds it all in is super soft. Slipping your arms in the jacket is pretty much the same feeling as slipping on a finely lined dress suit. It’s ridiculously nice.
Aside from the windproof, water-resistant, quick-drying and breathable features, Fjallraven really delivers in terms of their pockets. You’ll find double chest pockets, double hand pockets, and 2 interior mesh pockets. One feature I really like aside from the cargo capacity is how easy it is access all that gear thanks to leather pull tabs.
The 2-way front zipper itself is a breeze to open and close even with gloves on your hands too. While the hood is fixed, it’s plenty adjustable and thanks to the lightweight feel you might not even realize its there when down. Other features like an adjustable hem drawcord, button sleeves, and a hip length with an articulated cut and pre-shaped sleeves make the Fjallraven Skogso padded jacket a winner in my book.
Out of all the lightweight insulated fall and winter jackets I own, this one is by far my favorite to date! For me personally, it’s as close to perfection as it gets. And thanks to a really rugged construction I’m sure I’ll enjoy it for years and years to come.
