Why do people get survivor tattoos?

Survivor tattoos are visible, permanent reminders of growth, perseverance, and resilience.

Those of us that have survived through serious mental health issues, serious diseases such as cancer and heart maladies, or even domestic abuse and addiction, get tattoos as a reminder of the struggle, but also a reflection of growth and self-worth.

Survivor tattoos aren’t meant to signify that the battle is over but act as a marker in the fight for self, and a reminder to keep going whatever happens.

What are the most popular types of survivor tattoo ideas?

Most survivor tattoos reference moving forward from illness, injury, disease, or dangerous situations (or a combination).

Popular survivor designs include symbols such as:

  • Colors (domestic advice survivors incorporate purple or white for example)
  • Cancer ribbons
  • A semicolon (suicide)
  • Heart issues (an ECG or heart design)

These designs are also used in conjunction with motivational quotes or refrains.

What colors are the three main cancer ribbons?

Every type of cancer – even very rare ones – have a ribbon of their own. The three most familiar cancer ribbon colors correlate with the most common types of cancer.

Breast cancer, signified by a pink ribbon, is the most common cancer in the world. Lung cancer is second and marked by a white ribbon. Prostate cancer is third and represented by a ribbon of light blue.

What does the semicolon tattoo symbolize?

“A semicolon is used when an author could’ve chosen to end their sentence but chose not to. The author is you, and the sentence is your life.”  – Amy Bleuel

The semicolon tattoo was popularized by Amy Bleuel, the founder of Project Semicolon who unfortunately lost her mental health battle in 2017 at the age of 31.

The semicolon tattoo is meant to reflect that the battle is not over, and that self-harm and suicidal ideation can be fought against by sufferers, their supporters, and by the wider community.
