When it comes to high-end automobiles, nothing comes close to hypercars. These vehicles are the creme da la creme. They possess the most powerful engines, can reach the fastest speeds, and are outfitted with all the modern tech one expects from luxury sportscars. They also come with hefty price tags that mean only the elite can afford to ever own one.
When it comes to modern hypercars, there are dozens of makes and models on the market. Every major automobile brand, from Bugatti to Ferrari through to McLaren and Alfa Romeo has built a hypercar. Not only have the big players been apart of this explosion of hypercar creations, but many smaller and lesser-known companies have also made their mark, including Koenigsegg Automotive AB and Hennessy.
To give you an idea of how great these cars are, we’ve compiled a list of the best 20 hypercars ever built.
1. Ferrari LaFerrari
Ferrari’s entry into the hypercar market is a delicious looking coupe that retains Ferrari’s famous shape with a few special additions. The LaFerrari is a full hybrid powered by a 6.3-liter V12 engine and a 163 bhp electric engine that can hit 62 mph in just 2.4 seconds and 186 mph in only 15 seconds.
Only 500 Ferrari LaFerraris have been built, with the hypercar originally selling for a touch over $1 million. Since the last one was sold in 2016, they have sold at auction in excess of $10 million.
2. McLaren P1
This limited edition hybrid from McLaren Automotive was seen as the successor to the McLaren F1. Using hybrid power and Formula One technology, the P1 is a beast of a car that can reach 0-62 mph in 2.8 seconds, 0-24 mph in 6.8-seconds, and has a top speed of 217 mph.
The carbon fiber body contains two racing seats, competition-grade aerodynamics, scissor doors, a 7-speed dual-clutch, and a powerful 3.8-liter twin-turbocharged V8.
3. McLaren Senna
Unsurprisingly McLaren has a bevy of cars on this list. The British manufacturer has been a leader in the automotive world for decades and continues to outshine other brands. The McLaren Senna is named in tribute to the great McLaren driver Ayrton Senna and is all about speed.
Featuring a lightweight and aerodynamic design, the Senna isn’t for those who are after luxury interior or loads of fancy gadgets. This car is designed to go fast, with its 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine capable of producing 800 hp and reaching a top speed of 208 mph.
4. Lotus Evija
Weighing just over 3,700 pounds, Lotus claims the Evija is the lightest hypercar on the market. The first electric vehicle built by the company, the Evija is powered by a 70 kWh battery pack with each of the four engines located by the wheels. While the Evija is still in production and we are yet to see the finished car, what we do know is it uses Pirelli Trofeo R tires, AP Racing carbon-ceramic disc brakes, and is said to be able to reach 62 mph in three seconds with a top speed of over 200 mph.
5. Bugatti Chiron
Hypercar and Bugatti go hand in hand, with the Chiron one of the manufactures leading luxury cars. The successor to the Bugatti Veyron, this two-seater is a sleek looking hypercar that develops 1,479 bhp and 1,180 lb-ft of torque and has an incredible top speed of 261 mph. It’s often seen as the cornerstone of the Bugatti range and is one sexy looking vehicle.
6. Porsche 918 Spyder
The Porsche 911 is my favorite car from the German automaker, but if you’re talking hypercars, it’s hard to go past this beauty. Much heavier than its competition with greater battery capacity, the Porsche 918 Spyder comes equipped with a naturally aspirated 4.6-liter V8 engine and two electric motors delivering an additional 210 kW (282 hp) for a combined output of 652 kW (875 hp) and 1,280 Nm (944 lb-ft). It’s also a convertible and was the first street-legal production car to break the seven-minute barrier at Nürburgring. In other words, it’s fast. Very fast.
7. Koenigsegg One:1
Named ‘Hypercar of the Year’ in 2010 by Top Gear magazine, the Koenigsegg Agera is an aggressive machine built for speed. There have been several versions released over the years, with the Koenigsegg One:1 our pick of the bunch. Only six of these hypercars were built and all were sold before production had been completed. It has a variant of the 5.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine of previous iterations of the Koenigsegg. As it was track-made, the inside is pretty bare and the boot space is limited.
8. Aston Martin Vulcan
Launched in 2015, the Aston Martin Vulcan is a two-door, two-seat, high-performance lightweight track-only car. Only 24 were ever made, each costing a tidy $2.3 million. So what do you get for that amount of cash? In short, a ridiculously fast car that can reach 0-60 mph in less than 3.0 seconds and has a top speed of 200 mph. It also looks really good, which is an added bonus.
9. Pagani Huayra
Pagani Automobili S.p.A., or just Pagani as it’s commonly referred to, is a luxurious carmaker from Italy that specializes in exclusive rides. Similar to the Koenigsegg Agera, the Pagani Huarya hit the number one spot on Top Gear’s ‘Hypercar of the Year 2012’ list.
Equipped with Pirelli tires, a 7-speed sequential gearbox, and Brembo brake calipers, rotors, and pads, the Pagani Huarya has a top speed of about 238 mph and can hit 0-60 mph in just 2.8 seconds.
10. Koenigsegg Agera RS
Unveiled at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show, the Koenigsegg Agera RS is the follow-up to the Koenigsegg One:1. While the two cars look similar, the Agera RS’ updated 5.0-liter V8 engine churns out 1,160 hp while the electric engine provides 1,341 hp. Each customer who purchased an Agera RS had the ability to fully customize the car. Originally only 25 were commissioned, but two more were built, one as a factory development car and the other for a customer whose car was damaged during testing.
11. ASPARK OWL
This all-electric battery-powered beast from Japanese manufacturer Aspark is touted as the fastest accelerating car in the world. Despite being first previewed in 2019, the car only became available at the end of 2021, with an estimated 50 Aspark Owls up for grabs.
The performance numbers speak for themselves. The Owl can reach 0-60 mph in just 1.69 seconds and can top 186 mph in 10.6 seconds. It has a top speed of 249 mph, which is incredible for an electric car. If you want one, they don’t come cheap, so be prepared to fork out $3.2 million.
12. Pininfarina Battista
Named in tribute to Pininfarina’s founder Battista Pininfarina, this all-electric car was publicly unveiled at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show. Powered by a 120 kWh battery pack with four individual motors placed above each of the wheels, the Pininfarina Battista accelerates from 0-60 mph in 1.8 seconds and has a top speed of 217 mph.
Like most hypercars, this Battista Pininfarina is aerodynamic and has a sleek design that gives it an aggressive look. Only 150 of these cars have been built and are sold for $2.5 million each.
13. Rimac C Two
The first prototype of the Rimac Nevera was only released in August of 2021. If it looks similar to the Pininfarina Battista, that’s because it is manufactured in the same factory and based on the same platform. It features an all-electric engine, is capable of Level 4 of autonomous driving, and is equipped with butterfly doors. In a nod to The Grand Tour host Richard Hammond, who crashed a Rimac Concept One during a hill climb that caught on fire, there is a fire extinguisher in the back held in by a leather strap embossed with the words “In case of hill climb, extinguish fire.”
14. Hennessey Venom F5
We are talking about the car, not the drink when discussing the Hennessey Venom F5. This sexy two-door coupe is powered by a 6.6-liter Fury twin-turbocharged V8 engine attached to a 7-speed single-clutch automated manual transmission. It also boasts a top speed of 301 mph, making it one of the fastest hypercars on this list. All 24 cars were pre-sold for $2.1 million and began shipping late last year.
15. Alfa Romeo 4C
The Alfa Romeo 4C might not be judged as a hypercar by some, but we think it’s worth including. This small but shapely coupe comes with a 1750 cc turbo petrol engine with direct injection, the “Alfa TCT” twin dry clutch transmission, and a 6-speed dual-dry clutch. It was voted the ‘Most Beautiful Concept Car of the Year’ by the readers of German magazine Auto Bild, can reach 0-62 mph in 4.5 seconds, and has a top speed of 160 mph. These stats might pale in comparison to some of the other cars on this list, but the Alfa Romeo 4C is still a fantastic sportscar.
16. Ferrari SF90 Stradale
This classically designed Ferrari shares its name with the SF90 Formula One car and is an impressive hybrid that deserves the Ferrari name. There are four driving modes for different conditions, with the SF90 possessing three electric motors and a twin-turbocharged V8 engine. It’s the fastest Ferrari road vehicle and can accelerate from 0-62 mph in 2.5 seconds and has a top speed of 211 mph.
17. Aston Martin Valkyrie
This hybrid sports car from Aston Martin was built in collaboration with Red Bull Racing Advanced Technologies and several other manufactures. Looking something like the Batmobile, the Valkyrie is a carbon fiber monster with specially designed seats that are shaped to the owner’s body using 3D technology. Only 150 of these were made at a price of $3 million.
18. McLaren Speedtail
This limited edition McLaren was the fourth addition to the McLaren Ultimate Series. Under the hood is a 4.0-liter M840T twin-turbocharged V8 with a parallel hybrid system eMotor. The carbon-fiber monocoque body also houses a 7-speed Graziano dual-clutch and passenger seats integrated into the chassis. It’s capable of a top speed of 250 mph, which is very tasty.
19. Mercedes-AMG One
Looking like a futuristic race car, the Mercedes-AMG One is a plug-in hybrid featuring Formula One-derived technology. Amazingly all 275 units sold out shortly after the hypercar was announced, with production only beginning in 2022. The One boasts a 1.6-liter Mercedes-Benz PU106C Hybrid E-turbo V6 with an 8-speed single-clutch automated manual. It’s believed to have a top speed of 217 mph and can accelerate from 0-62 mph in 2.2 seconds.
20. Lamborghini Sian
The sleek-looking Sian is the first hybrid production vehicle produced by Lamborghini and it’s a showstopper. The Sian possess the same engine as the Lamborghini Aventador, a 6.5-liter V12, but with an electric motor integrated into the gearbox. Like most of the other hypercars on this list, the Sian has some incredible speed, able to reach 0 to 62 mph in 2.8 seconds and attain an electronically limited top speed of 220 mph.
