Albinism is a gentic condition that impacts the coloring (pigmentation) of the skin, hair, and eyes. People who have this condition often have very fair skin and white or light-colored hair. It is a fairly rare condition, with just one in 20,000 people worldwide suffering from albinism. There are several different types of albinism that can affect all races. Oculocutaneous albinism (OCA) usually results in white skin, hair, and eye color. While those who have ocular albinism (OA) have normal skin color and hair, but their eyes are white. 1. Brother Ali

American rapper Brother Ali is someone who hasn’t let albinism get in his way. He started rapping at the age of eight and soon developed a passion for hip-hop that led to a successful career in the music business. Brother Ali has released seven albums and several mixtapes and EPs over the years.
When he’s not rapping, Ali focuses on his activism work. Most of his songs center on social justice, human rights, and the political landscape, which he supports by protesting and attending marches and meetings with fellow social justice warriors.
Brother Ali is also blind, which is a common condition associated with people who suffer from albinism. But this hasn’t stopped him from having a successful career and living a fulfilling life.
2. Darnell Swallow

Born in Ipswich but raised in St. Louis, Darnell Swallow is best known for his appearance on the UK edition of Big Brother. While in the States he got involved with gangs and ended up doing time in prison. He was eventually deported back to England. Swallow sees this as a blessing as it helped him escape the gang culture. He now mentors groups of teens in North London to steer them away from joining a gang.
Swallow is also a music lover who writes and performs his own music. He was a controversial figure on Big Brother 6, often speaking his find and getting into arguments with fellow housemates. Despite this, he lasted until the final week, eventually being the fifth last person voted out of the house.
3. Salif Keita

The ‘Golden Voice of Africa’ is one of the great African singers. A member of the Keita royal family, Salif Keita was cast out by his parents due to his albinism, which was seen as bad luck. He began playing with several bands but was eventually forced to flee his home of Mali in the 70s due to political unrest. Keita settled in the Ivory Coast with his group, Les Ambassadeurs Internationaux, slowly earning a reputation as a great live band. He moved to Paris to kick start his solo career in the 80s and quickly became famous across Europe.
His music merges West African sounds with European and American influences. The lyrics of Keita’s songs often comment on social and political issues. He is also a noted supporter of the albino community, with his 2009 album La DiffĂ©rence dedicated to the struggles faced by albino people. Retiring from music in 2018, Keita now resides back in his birthplace of Mali, living out his final days in peace and prosperity.
4. Johnny Winter

Blues icon Johnny Winter is another famous albino person who made his mark in the world of music. A talented singer and guitarist, Winter recorded his first song at the age of 15. He would go on to release 19 studio albums and produce three Grammy Award-winning records for blues legend Muddy Waters. Other accolades he received during his career included being the first musician to feature on the cover of Guitar World in 1980 and being the first non-African American to enter the Blues Hall of Fame in 1988. Winter continued to record and tour right up until his death in 2014 when he was found dead in his hotel room in Switzerland a few days after performing at the Cahors Blues Festival in France.
5. Thando Hopa

Hailing from South Africa, Thando Hopa is an inspiration to all people with albinism. While working as a prosecutor, Hopa was spotted by fashion designer Gert-Johan Coetzee who wanted her to model his clothing. This led to a career in modeling, with Hopa becoming the first person with albinism to appear on the cover of Vogue. She also features in the mini-series Troy: Fall of a City as the Artemis, the goddess of the hunt, nature, and childbirth.
Hopa has used her newfound celebrity to help the albino community, raising awareness of the condition. As a black woman with albinism, she is using her platform to discuss inclusivity and prejudice and her thoughts on identity. She has spoken at many conferences and written a number of great articles about her experiences with albinism.

6. Edgar Winter

The younger brother of Johnny Winter was also born with albinism. He followed his brother into the music industry, forming numerous bands and playing with some of music’s biggest names. Although not as successful as Johnny, Edgar Winter did get some recognition in the 70s with his band The Edgar Winter Group. The ensemble topped both the US and Canadian charts with the release of the instrumental single Frankenstein. Winter is still making music and performing, with his latest release, Brother Johnny, a fitting tribute to his deceased brother.
7. Connie Chiu

Connie Chiu is recognized as the first fashion model with albinism to make it big. Born in British Hong Kong, she moved with her family to Sweden when she was just seven. The reason being her sensitivity to the sun thanks to her condition.
Chiu got into modeling thanks to her sister. After sending a black and white photo to French fashion designer Jean-Paul Gaultier, Chiu soon found herself walking the catwalk at his autumn/winter show in 1994. As well as modeling, Chiu is a jazz musician who also studied journalism.
8. Shaun Ross

Another albino model with a successful career in the world of fashion is Shaun Ross. The New York native had a tough upbringing, being bullied by his peers for the coloration of his skin. This didn’t deter Ross from chasing his dreams though, with the American training at the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater (AAADT) for five years. During this time he was discovered on YouTube and signed by AMCK Models London.
While he has modeled for some of the big fashion designers, Ross also has a passion for music. Not only has he appeared in the music video clips for Katy Perry’s E.T., Beyonce’s Party, and Leona Lewis’ Fire Under My Feet, but he has also released his own music. He dropped his first full-length album, SHIFT, in 2021, and continues to pursue a successful career in the entertainment industry.
9. Victor Varnado
One of many people who were born an albino, Victor Varnado also suffers from a loss of sight. This hasn’t stopped him from making a name for himself in the entertainment business. First starting out with a local improvisational group, Varnado’s big break came when he starred in the music video for Elton John’s Recover Your Soul. This led to parts in other films along with Varnado forming his own production company.
While he hasn’t acted as much in the past decade, Varnado has established himself as a successful comedian. He is a member of Chicago City Limits, New York’s longest-running comedy improv theater company, and is one of the most famous albino people in the world
10. Yellowman

Born Winston Foster, Yellowman is an accomplished Jamaican reggae and dancehall deejay. Also known as King Yellowman, the musician was massive in the 80s, releasing close to 30 albums and over 40 singles. It wasn’t until the mid-90s that he found international fame. He continues to create music and perform throughout the world and was awarded the Order of Distinction (Officer Class) by the Jamaican government in 2018.
