The majority of us are guilty of living in a constant state of rush. We rarely, if ever, find the time to slow down and look within. But, isn’t that where you’ll find what truly matters? A holiday is the ideal time to give yourself that opportunity to reflect and heal, away from daily worries and distractions. So, here are some ideas for trips that are dedicated to spirituality.
Camino de Santiago

For centuries, pilgrims walked from various corners of Europe with one goal in mind – to reach Santiago de Compostela, where the infamous burial site of apostle St. James is believed to lie. This journey was always undertaken with the purpose of religious or spiritual fulfilment.
The very simplicity of it – walking, eating, sleeping, repeating – is the reason Camino still attracts thousands of people each year. It allows for deep introspection and a quiet connection with the self and the surrounding nature.
Perhaps the most popular route today is the Camino Francés from Sarria to Santiago, marking the final 100 kilometers of this ancient route. Upon completing this trail, pilgrims receive the traditional “Compostela” certificate, verifying their achievement. However, the true achievements are reached in the journey, not the destination.
Wellness retreats

Wellness retreats offer a more structured and supportive environment for spiritual healing, with a team of professionals and a program designed for your goals. This can range from yoga retreats in Costa Rica to meditation-focused getaways in Bali.
For those seeking a more intensive trauma healing, there are also specialised retreats, such as women-only sanctuaries in Italy. They provide a safe and empowering space, where women can come together to share their experiences and leave having helped each other heal.
Regardless of the destination, most retreats are set in a serene, natural environment, whether it’s on top of a mountain or deep in the forests. Away from busy city life, you learn the various spiritual techniques to help you let go of the past.
Ancient wisdom

For some people, spirituality can be found through visiting sacred places that hold ancient traditions and values. Japan, for instance, is home to countless historic temples and shrines that provide the perfect atmosphere for deep contemplation. The doors of these buildings have welcomed generation after generation, and so it’s impossible to ignore their profoundness, regardless of your religious beliefs.
Similarly, Sedona in the United States is often referred to as a “cathedral without walls”. The area is famous for its powerful energy vortexes (energy centres), located amidst breathtaking red rock formations. Long held as sacred by indigenous tribes, this site is believed to have around 15 swirling centres of the earth’s energy. Here, self-discovery and spiritual growth is accelerated, as you surround yourself with positive vibrations.
Finding your rhythm
Spiritual healing is a deeply personal journey and there is no right or wrong here… So, it does not matter whether you find meaning in a historic temple of a large city or deep in the forests, as long as you take the time to intentionally slow down and look within.
