No matter what tattoo you’re after, if you get it in the ditch—either in the crook of the elbow or the back of the knee (or armpit!?)—it’s going to be a tough job, and it’s going to hurt.

For tattoo artists, ditch art is either kryptonite or a source of pride. Because the area is so prone to movement and shifting skin, it is incredibly difficult to get their art into that epidermis correctly. Masters of the ditch, however, are the true wizards of the tattoo.
If you’re considering a ditch tattoo, recognize the fact that this area takes longer to heal than any other area on the body and requires special attention. With movement and day-to-day activity, your ditch(es) is constantly in motion and rubbing against other skin. For it to heal properly and look its best, you’re going to have to keep your arm or leg as straight as possible for 36 hours following your session.
