Anyone unfamiliar with the work of Coheed and Cambria will look on your Keywork tattoo with a questioning gaze, thinking it may be some ancient symbol from a dead civilization.
On the contrary, the symbol represents not only the band, but, more importantly, planetary alignment within the Amory Wars universe.
All true C & C fans know that, until their latest release, all of their music came in the form of concept albums that represent the sci-fi universe created by Claudio Sanchez known as The Amory Wars.
Sanchez’s initial story was called The Bag.On.Line Adventures which featured two protagonists named Coheed and Cambria. Most of the band’s tracks represent a chapter or an event in the storyline.
Sanchez’s universe is known as Heaven’s Fence. It consists of seventy-eight planets and seven stars, known as the Stars of Sirius. A beam of light connects each, and it is known as the Keywork. The inhabitants of the universe use the Keywork to travel between planets and stars.
It generates life-giving nutrients to distribute amongst the planets and is comprised of the departed souls of the various civilizations scattered throughout Heaven’s Fence. It represents the balance of the universe; if any star were to be destroyed, it would cease to connect the Stars of Sirius.
People wear the Keywork symbol as a tattoo for two reasons: it’s awesome, and they love Coheed and Cambria and the Amory Wars. It is a deeply spiritual symbol, one that represents the dead, the living, and balance in which the universe hangs.
