This side-scrolling platformer became a game of its own back in ’87. The story follows Dr. Wily, an assistant to Dr. Light, who becomes a jealous mad scientist and unleashes robot hordes on the world. Megaman, created by Dr. Light, rises to the occasion to take out the hordes, one errant robot at a time.
After the first game, Dr. Wily becomes a recurrent character, constantly trying to outdo Megaman with his mustache and bat-shaped hair as he sends out horde after horde of robots. The Megaman games have been seen as being one of the most consistent series in video game history.
Even though they feature new stories, characters, and the like, they are built around the same core gameplay mechanics and level structure. There’s never been a better time to commemorate the Megaman franchise than now, as it’s just now hitting its 30 year anniversary. Such a great and well-known game franchise as Megaman should be celebrated by a tattoo at the very least, if not a gold statuette and a framed photograph.
