The atomic bomb was invented in the 1940s by the men of the Manhattan Project, a team of scientists working on the ultimate destructive weapon. Helmed by J. Robert Oppenheimer, they were successful and dropped bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
Oppenheimer would later come to regret his invention, and many of the scientists involved in the Manhattan Project returned to laboratories and classrooms as they no longer wanted to have anything to do with war.

It is the subject of many essays, books, and films, as our preoccupation with the fallout from wartime has always been a part of our collective psyche.
