There may be no creature that walks this earth more wise, fierce, cuddly, powerful, and spiritually peaceful than the red panda. Native to the eastern Himalayas, southwestern China, and Tibet, this proud creature lives primarily in trees and feeds on bamboo, eggs, birds, and insects.
It hunts at dawn and dusk and spends most of the daytime hours lazing around or snoozing on a wide branch.
It is the only living species of the genus Ailurus, of the family Ailuridae and is not, in fact, closely related to the giant panda.
At one time, the red panda lived across Eurasia as far as Britain and even in North America (a red panda tooth was discovered in Tennessee that dates back to 4.5-7 million years ago). It is considered by biologists to be a living fossil, as it relates to other species only distantly.
