Sophie Turner’s Tattoos and What They Mean

Sophie Turner was cast as Sansa Stark at just age 12, and spent her entire teenage starring in one of the most watched television shows of all time: HBO’s Game of Thrones.

In life as in art, Turner has grown into a well-adjusted adult, and budding screen superstar. Now 24, Turner has found love with husband Joe Jonas, and starred in two big budget X-Men movies as Jean Grey/The Phoenix.

Along her path to adulthood and stardom Turner has marked her devotion to family, friendship, and work, in ink. Sophie Turner tattoos burst with meaning and a minimalist flair.

How many tattoos does Sophie Turner have?

So far Sophie Turner’s tattoo collection has 15 small pieces. The elderst Stark daughter went through some serious changes over the course of the series, right through until the controversial last season. Beginning as a naïve, self-interested girl she emerged a tough as nails leader, the victorious Lady of Winterfell in the series finale

Despite half of her life spent in the maelstrom of public fame – a difficult life to lead in the digital era – Turner has proven to be an engaging, entertaining young star mixing quality screen work, with ranging interests, and a commitment to self-expression. Being a fan of quality tattoos being a prime example.

Being so young, we’re expecting Turner’s tastes in ink styles and choices to change and grow just as she has.

1. North Star on her spine

Sophie’s North Star is a fine line and dot tattoo. The North Star is a symbol of guidance, protection and good luck, bringing you home safely in the night. Sophie’s tattoo is tiny – no more than a couple of hairs wide – it is a delicate, elegant, and feminine piece of body art.

2. Tally marks on her right ring finger

This is another simple fine line piece. Sophie has a tally of five representing all five members of her immediate family. The counting process with four vertical lines crossed diagonally to make five, could be as much as 35,000 years old.

Sophie has chosen a sophisticated and thoughtful way to represent her family with this small piece.

3. The Letter “G” on her right pinkie finger

Written in a beautiful feminine script this letter G is a simple homage to her grandfather. She got the piece at the same time her husband Joe Jonas also inked a memorial to his own grandfather.

4. Impossible triangle above her left elbow

The impossible triangle. Greek letters lambda, epsilon, and phi represent Plato’s theory that the soul is made up of three parts: reason, spirit, and appetite.

Sophie’s brother Will sports a matching tattoo representing spirit, her other brother James is reason, and Sophie herself is appetite.

5. “The Pack Survives” and dire wolf emblem

Sophie’s tattoo choices are generally spare, but the dire wolf ink she got at the end of HBO’s epic fantasy drama was her most complex tattoo.

The dire wolf – which she unveiled on the Late Late Show with James Cordern, was considered some to be a major spoiler for the finale to the HBO series, and at the time the thrones tattoo was a source of regret for Turner.

Tattoo artist Lauren Winzer used handwritten style script and a simple fine line version of the direwolf emblem from House Stark. The thrones star, the most sensible of the stark family, has said in interviews that it’s a moral she likes to live by.

It’s also an appropriate homage to her role on the show Game of Thrones, and its role in her life. The original quote is:

“When the snows fall and the white winds blow, the lone wolf dies, but the pack survives.”

The thrones tattoo is not her only link to the show: Turner adopted the dog who played her wolf Lady in Game.

6. Her brother’s initials on her big toe

This one is rather self-explanatory. It’s another piece symbolizing the special place family holds in her heart. Turner revealed that she decided to get this ink, while drunk at a house party, the traditional tattoo rite of passage for many young people worldwide.

7. Bunny Rabbit

This one is a simple cute outline of a bunny in black with four red lines representing whiskers on its face. It was inked by tattoo artist Chris Montgomery. Sophie sports this on the back of her right arm. Talk show host Conan O’Brien suggested to her that Turner’s tattoo looks like “bunnies fornicating” but the young actress insists that it’s purely a coincidence.

8. Portrait

Turner hasn’t made public comment on this minimalist portrait of a woman’s face and shoulder – its meaning is a little bit harder to decipher. Knowing the meaning, behind Turner’s other tattoos this piece is most likely in honor of a friend or relative.

9. Little J on her wrist

This adorable little j is Sophie’s humble tribute to her husband Joe Jonas, the middle Jonas Brother who, along with Kevin and Nick, found fame at a young age. He sports a matching little s for Sophie in the same spot.

10. X-Men Logo

No spoiler for this superhero ink! This tattoo references her role in the X-Men franchise and is located on her left ribcage. The version chosen is the logo for Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters. While it’s a small and simple tattoo it is not in the same minimalist style as much of her other work. The tattoos lines are etched more thickly, and the X is filled in mirroring the actual logo in real life.

11. 07.08.09

The 7th of August, 2009 is the day that Sophie and best friend/co star Maisie Williams found out they’d been cast in Game of Thrones together as the Stark siblings. Maisie – who played Sansa’s bad ass Arya Stark – sports a matching tattoo in red ink on her left arm. Sophie’s is in peach on her right arm. The almost flesh colored tattoo was her mother’s idea to help her hide it when acting in the HBO series.

12. The Phoenix

The Phoenix has long been a symbol of birth and rebirth, of rising from the ashes. It also happens to be the role she played as Jean Grey in the latest X-Men movie. This ultra minimalist tattoo is a single fine line flame outline on her right index finger.

Sophie’s tattoo is just the & Beyond part. You have to find the middle Jonas brother to make sense of it. This is a cute couple’s matching tattoo representing their mutual love of Buzz Lightyear from Toy Story. It also represents their future together. Sophie’s is written in beautifully simple script with a shining star and Buzz’s spaceship.

14. Tribute to her late dog Waldo

Another tattoo she shares with her husband, this is a touching tribute to the couple’s late dog Waldo, an Alaskan Klee Kai. This is the most intricate of Turner’s ink, showing the dog Waldo looking cute and lovable. It’s tattooed in black and gray realistic portrait style rendering. Jonas’ version of the tattoo was accompanied by the Instagram post: “R.I.P MY LITTLE ANGEL

Turner also added her new tattoo after Waldo’s death. It was applied by the tattoo artist Dragon at Bang Bang Tattoo. Sitting next to her little j this is another tattoo celebrating the couple’s marriage. Similar in style to Sophie’s tattoo of the North Star, this piece was simply drawn in delicate fine line black ink.
